Dining height or coffee height? Check the table first

"Bistro set" can mean two very different things. Dining-height sets have a table around 66–80cm high, which is right for breakfast or dinner for two. Our stackable steel set, the aluminium set and the 80cm glass-top wicker sets are dining height. Lounge-style 3 piece settings pair low armchairs with a 40–51cm side table. They're more comfortable for a coffee or a book, but you'll be eating off your lap.

Sizing a small balcony or courtyard

Measure your space before you shop. For a face-to-face layout, add the table width to the depth of both chairs, then allow about 60cm behind each chair to sit down and stand up. Leave a clear path to the door. On narrow apartment balconies, a 60cm round table with slim chairs fits where an 80cm table won't. On high-rise balconies, keep furniture away from the balustrade so children can't climb it. Light pieces can move in strong wind, so stack or store them when a storm is forecast. Check your strata or body corporate rules too.

Coastal air: aluminium vs powder-coated steel

Most of our sets use powder-coated steel. It's strong, stable and good value, but steel can rust where the coating is chipped, and salt air near the coast speeds that up. Aluminium doesn't rust, so it's the better choice if you live near the beach. Our aluminium set has cast iron legs, so treat those like steel. Whatever the frame, rinse it with fresh water every few weeks if you're near the coast, dry it, and touch up any chips early. Rubber or non-slip feet help protect tiles and decking.

Sun, rain and cushions in Australian conditions

UV levels in Queensland and northern Australia regularly reach the extreme range in summer. The PE wicker on these sets is rated as UV-resistant, but dark wicker and glass tops can get hot in direct afternoon sun. Several sets have an umbrella hole, or you can position the set where it gets shade later in the day. Cushion covers on the wicker sets are removable and washable. Bring cushions inside or store them dry during wet weather to prevent mildew. Textilene sling chairs have no cushions, so they dry quickly after rain, which makes them a practical choice for uncovered balconies. A breathable furniture cover or a spot under the eaves will extend the life of any set.

Orders are usually dispatched from our Melbourne distribution centre one working day after cleared payment. Estimated delivery is about 3–5 working days for VIC, 4–8 for NSW, SA and ACT, and 7–10 for QLD, NT, WA and TAS. Heavier parcels (over 22kg) go by courier, which will contact you before delivery. Some remote postcodes can't receive bulky items. See our shipping policy for the full list. All sets need simple assembly.

Outdoor bistro set FAQs

What size balcony do I need for a bistro set?

Add the table width to the depth of a chair on each side. With the chairs pushed in, our dining-height sets measure about 1.45m to 2m end to end. Then allow about 60cm behind each chair so you can pull it out and stand up comfortably. Check the exact dimensions in the comparison table before ordering.

Is aluminium or steel better for a bistro set near the beach?

Aluminium does not rust, so it is usually the better choice close to the coast. Powder-coated steel is strong and affordable but can rust where the coating is chipped or scratched. Note that our aluminium set has cast iron legs, so give those the same care as steel: rinse off salt and touch up any chips.

Can I eat a meal at a bistro set?

Only at a dining-height set. The tables in our stackable, aluminium and 80cm wicker sets are 66.5cm to 72cm high, which suits meals. The wicker and rocking sets with a 40cm to 42cm side table are coffee height, made for drinks and books, not plates.

Can I leave my bistro set outside all year?

The frames are powder-coated and the wicker is UV-resistant, but cushions, glass and finishes all last longer with some protection. In strong Australian sun, store cushions when not in use, use a breathable cover or move the set under cover, and wipe down the frame regularly, especially near the coast.

How long does delivery take?

Orders usually leave our Melbourne distribution centre one working day after cleared payment. Estimated delivery is about 3 to 5 working days for VIC, 4 to 8 for NSW, SA and ACT, and 7 to 10 for QLD, NT, WA and TAS. Some remote postcodes cannot receive bulky items, so please check our shipping policy.

Do bistro sets need assembly?

Yes. The sets arrive flat-packed and need some simple assembly. The instructions are in the box.
